Cataracts also known as ‘Safed Motiya’ are clouding of the natural, clear lens of the eye. It usually develops as we age, but occasionally, cataract formation may be seen in newborn babies and young ones too. Whatever may be the cause, cataract leads progressive blurring of vision(commonest symptom), double or blurred vision, altered perception of colors, glare, sensitivity to bright light, difficulty in night driving, seeing multiple images, frequent changes in the power of glasses are some of the problems that occur, making it difficult for an individual to perform his/her daily tasks. Cataract usually develops in both eyes, but may be more in one eye. As a caution, you should never let cataract become too severe, as any delay in seeking proper and timely treatment may leave you visually impaired for the rest of your life.
Every individual over 40 yrs. of age should go for annual comprehensive eye check up by an ophthalmologist.
Risk factors for developing Cataracts include:
Cataract cannot be corrected with glasses; the clouding of the natural lens essentially prevents that. There is no specific medication to cure it, surgery is the only way to treat it. In cataract surgery, the surgeon removes the clouded lens and puts an Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) in your eye. Your vision will be as good as pre-cataract days, though you may need to wear glasses. Over the years, cataract surgery has moved from vision restorative to refractive surgery, so that you have reduced need of glasses.
